A 16-year-old boy who died after an attack in Chelmsford has been described by his family as a “kind and loving young man”.

Andy Wood was found injured near a green space off Waterson Vale, a quiet residential street in Chelmsford, at around 11.30pm on Sunday after reports of a boy sustaining serious injuries.

He was taken to hospital where he later died.

Essex Police said an 18-year-old was arrested in the early hours of Monday on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

Detectives had sealed off an area of woodland beside a children’s playground off the street on Monday to continue their investigation.

In a statement released by police, the teenager’s family said: “Andy was a kind and loving young man.

“He touched the lives of countless people.

“His loss has left a massive hole in the lives of his family and friends.”

Police have asked the public to not speculate on social media about the circumstances surrounding his death.
