Transport agency Maersk has taken a big step to decarbonise its fleet by spending £1bn on eight vessels that may run on “inexperienced” methanol.
The Danish firm has dedicated to solely ordering new container ships which may use carbon-neutral gas as a part of its plan to succeed in net-zero emissions by 2050.
To fulfill its goal, the agency might want to have a carbon-neutral fleet by 2030 as vessels usually have a lifetime of 20 to 35 years.
Maersk stated the brand new ships can every carry 16,000 containers and would save about a million tonnes of CO2 emissions a yr.
The corporate expects to see its annual emissions – at present at 33 million tonnes of CO2 – drop by about 3%.
The ships could have engines that may run on each inexperienced methanol, produced with renewable sources corresponding to biomass and photo voltaic power, and regular bunker gas for when provides of carbon-neutral gas are scarce.
Inexperienced methanol could be made both instantly from biomass or when renewable hydrogen is mixed with carbon captured from emissions sources or from biomass.
The ships every price $175m (£127.6m) and are 10 to fifteen% dearer than regular ones, Maersk stated.
Their supply is predicted in 2024.
Maersk stated greater than 100 of its largest clients, corresponding to Amazon, Disney and Microsoft, had set targets to chop emissions of their provide chain, or had been within the means of doing so.
